New Google Chrome Will Increase The Battery Life Of Laptops

Hi TFans,

Chrome is probably the most used web browser across all platforms, but that's not because it's the ideal browser. While it has improved significantly over the years, especially in the area of memory management, Chrome is still notorious for draining battery life, which Microsoft Edge (predating the Chromium version) tried to capitalize on. This disadvantage may soon become a thing of the past if the latest Chrome update becomes stable - it can save users from 30 minutes to 2 hours of battery life even with dozens of open tabs.

The optimization planned by Google focuses on what is one of the quiet killers of the web browser: Javascript timers. These timers fire at intervals to check for things like page scrolling, ad analysis, logging, etc. While they may be important for the web pages you are currently browsing, timers don't make much sense for most pages that open in tabs other than the current one.

Google checked how much battery is saved by setting the Javascript timer interval to turn on only once a minute. With 36 background pages open and one blank page open, battery life was extended by almost 2 hours, which means an increase of 28%. Of course, no one leaves a blank tab, and Google ran another test with YouTube video playback, no power saving or screen dimming. The battery life has increased by half an hour or 13%, which is important for notebooks.

Of course, this kind of optimization will have side effects and some pages may not work as expected if the Javascript timers are set in the above way. In this regard, Apple has found a good solution for Safari - it is to apply this policy only after five minutes of inactivity in the background tabs. Google is reportedly planning to do the same.

Implementing these changes will significantly improve Chrome's performance across all platforms. However, Google will provide system administrators with the option to disable this feature for at least one year after its release. This will allow them to test the feature and make sure nothing is broken or make the necessary changes to become compliant with the new policy.
