Our Man Crush Monday is...
A super human on the pitch
A famous footballer
A talented midfielder
Former super eagles captain
A great player and philanthropist
John Mikel Obi
Nigeria can boast of great players, in spite of the disappointment that trails the super eagles games in recent years. We've had players that made our jaws drop in amazement, and those that have saved our face at the eleventh hour and many others who have captained the team to victory. Mikel Obi is no doubt one of the best midfielders we love to see on the pitch, coordinating the team and getting the ball to the right legs.
He's not just a player, but a patriotic one who want the best for his nation. This can be seen through his act of charity and determination to help others climb with ease, the ladder he climbed with difficulties, to victory.
John Michael Nchekube Obinna was born on the 22nd of April, 1987 in Anambra state. His father was a civil servant while his mother was a business woman.
Mikel's passion for football began at an early age, when he would join other kids in his neighborhood to play the game until he's exhausted. He began his journey to fame when his skills caught the attention of a rich football agent, while playing on the dusty field of Jos Metropolis Primary School.
From there he was able to join the state team to further prove his outstanding skill to state sport officials. Mikel gained global recognition for his superb performance at the FIFA World Youth Championship, although the tournament ended in a loss for the Nigerian team at the finals against Argentina.
He started his career internationally with a Norwegian team Lyn in 2004, he then moved on to Chelsea in 2006, in a controversial bid, that led to a feud between Chelsea and Manchester United who both wanted him in their team.
He had a long stay in Chelsea with a contract that lasted for 11 years, ending in 2017. He then proceeded to China, where he spent two years, before returning to England on a shot term contract with Middlesbrough. He later joined Trabzonspor, in July, 2019.
Mikel played 91 times for Nigeria and scored 6 goals.
Mikel Obi's worth is estimated to be over $60 million dollars, with mansions in Lagos, Abuja, Jo's and London. He also has several exotic cars including a 2012 Mercedes Benz, 2010 Bentley Continental, and a nice looking Roles Royce.
Mikel Obi us married to a Russian model, Olga Dyachenko, daughter of a wealthy business tycoon. The marriage is blessed with two kids, Mia and Via.
