WHO ARE THE LIKELY FAVORITE FOR 2022 BALLON D'OR AWARD

HELLO T-FANS,

The 67th edition of football's most coveted individual award, the Ballon d'Or, will take place on Monday, October 17, nearly two months earlier than the typical date of the event. France Football opted to choose mid-October due to the forthcoming World Cup in Qatar.

In March, France Football announced changes to the Ballon d'Or voting procedures, the most significant of which is that the award will now be given based on performances over a single season rather than a calendar year.

As a result, performances at the 2022 World Cup, which will begin in November, won't be considered this year but rather when voting for the 2023 Ballon d'Or begins. The value of trophies has also decreased, therefore the award should now honor the top footballers from each season rather than those who have won the most silverware.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the award in recent years. At least one of  the duo has made top three for the award since 2007 with Messi winning on seven occasions to Ronaldo’s five.

Since 2007, Messi has made the podium every year bar 2018, while Ronaldo has only missed out in 2010 and 2021. It looks safe to assume, however, that neither will feature in the top three for 2022.

T-fans, let's check out ten current favorites to win 2022 edition of the Ballon d’Or.

Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid)
23 clean sheets. Won Champions League, La Liga & Supercopa de Espana.

Courtois' Man-of-the-Match winning performance in the Champions League final only served to further solidify his position as the world's finest goalkeeper during the previous season.
The Belgian proved why he is one of the best goalkeepers around with a string of impressive saves in Paris and throughout the campaign itself, helping Real Madrid win a superb double.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Two goals, 22 assists, 24 clean sheets. Won FA Cup & Carabao Cup.

Since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006, there hasn't been a defender to win the Ballon d'Or. Trent Alexander-Arnold  put on excellent performances  this season, yet it seems doubtful that he will break that duck.

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)
21 goals, 18 assists. Won Premier League.

Despite having a rocky start to the season, Kevin De Bruyne delivered when it mattered. His performances have helped Manchester City retain the Premier League title, despite a stiff challenge from Liverpool.
The Belgian international won the Premier League's Player of the Season award after continuously scoring goals in the second half of the season.

Luka Modric (Real Madrid)
7 goals, 14 assists. Won Champions League, La Liga & Supercopa de Espana.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner remains an integral part of the Real Madrid squad.Modric with the Croatian star showing no signs of slowing down at the age of 36.
The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is unlikely to repeat as champion in 2022, but a spot in the top 10 is certainly a guarantee.

Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid)
22 goals, 19 assists. Won Champions League, La Liga & Supercopa de Espana.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, the 21-year-old Brazilian upped his performance and became an important player for Real Madrid. Despite the fact that Karim Benzema frequently stole the show, Vinicius' influence was felt.

The Champions League final match-winner, Vinicius capped his breakout campaign with the biggest goal of the European club season to secure Real Madrid's 14th European Cup.

Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)
49 goals, 31 assists. Won Ligue 1 & UEFA Nations League.

Mbappe continued to thrive for Paris Saint-Germain. The 23-year-old remained the club’s star man. Can Mbappe win the Ballon d'Or by staying in Ligue 1?

Yes, but if he wants to win the title in 2023, PSG will need to step up their game in the Champions League and potentially win another World Cup in Qatar.

Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)
57 goals, 12 assists. Won Bundesliga & DFL-Supercup.

The 33-year-old Pole once more breached European and German defenses. This season, he scored an outstanding 35 goals in 34 Bundesliga games and 12 goals in nine Champions League games.
However, Lewandowski's defeat by Villarreal in the Champions League quarterfinal in April makes him unlikely to take home this year's Ballon d'Or.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
33 goals, 19 assists. Won FA Cup & Carabao Cup.

Mohamed Salah dominated in the Premier League once again by winning the Premier League Golden Boot for the third time, though he shared the award with Son Heung-min.

The Liverpool man raised his game this season, with 23 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League,  Even though he struggled to maintain that level throughout the entire season, the Egypt star's stellar play in the first half of the year, when he was unquestionably the best player on the planet, should not be overlooked by the Ballon d'Or judges.

Sadio Mane (Liverpool)
33 goals, five assists. Won Africa Cup of Nations, FA Cup & Carabao Cup.

Mane won it all with Liverpool in his career at Anfield, including an FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season. However, what’s more important, Mane won the AFCON with Senegal and also the Africa Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament award.

Failing to win the Premier League and Champions League this year is not going to do him any favours in a battle for Ballon d’Or in October. The wait for a first African winner since George Weah in 1995 is set to continue.

Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
48 goals, 15 assists. Won Champions League, La Liga, UEFA Nations League & Supercopa de Espana.

Benzema checks all the boxes necessary to win a Ballon d'Or in terms of consistency throughout the season, quantity of performances at the highest level, perseverance in the most stressful situations, and overall prize haul.
Benzema finished fourth in a race for the last year’s Ballon d’Or, but now only a miracle could stop him from winning the award.

There is not a player who even comes close to the Real Madrid striker in terms of impact on the 2021-22 European season, and anyone who does not vote for him better have a good reason why!

Checking through the list, is there any player you feel should not be on the list
