Hello T-Fans, Paracetamol also known as acetaminophen is a common pain killer used to relief pains like; Headaches, Cramps pain, and other mild body pain. It can also be used to reduce the effect of high body temperature, and it is sold in every pharmacy seeing how a doctor's prescription is not needed before one can purchase it.
But as harmless as paracetamol is, a lot of people ve and are now abusing this very drug by consuming it in high doses, all in the name of "na chalk e no dey work as e suppose to or as before". But today paracetamol is one of the leading causes of liver failure in the human body.
How Paracetamol Overdose Can Cause Liver Failure In The Human Body.
The standard dose for taking acetaminophen is two (2) tablets, but for some people, it is no longer enough for them, they now go as far as taking four (4) to six (6) tablets. To make matters worse, some now resort to taking it with Alcohol.
Alcohol and drugs don't mix. Alcohol is a liver microsomal enzyme inducer, this means; it increases the activities of microsomal enzymes in the liver, which leads to a rapid breakdown of paracetamol to N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine, which is the toxic metabolite of acetaminophen. This metabolite is responsible for liver damage, which later leads to liver failure.
Paracetamol overdose can be lethal and can cause; severe liver damage, kidney failure, pancreatitis, and low sugar level.
Most individuals feel like every slight headache calls for the intake of paracetamol, when in truth the body simply needs sleep, due to the day stress.
If after resting and you still feel headaches, then you can take 2 tablets of paracetamol. Most of the times headache is a symptom of a disease, so if symptoms persist after taking acetaminophen, you should see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. |
